Providing Treatment for 35 Years: I have had the privilege of providing continuous service to the community for over 35 years in clinics and private practice in the East Bay, including a multi-racial clinic. I have also chaired a drug abuse prevention non-profit and provided educational workshops and consultation to colleagues at universities, professional associations and privately. I did graduate studies at Berkeley and have been a Walnut Creek psychologist for over 30 years.
Philosophy: Relationships have the power to heal the mind and heart. Creating a safe therapeutic environment is basic to facilitating growth. I blend respect, compassion and understanding with knowledge of scientific advances that support emotional healing. The therapy relationship is highly individual and tailored to your personality and needs. Research-based treatment: Mental health treatment has been given a tremendous boost in recent years from brain and developmental research. We understand more about ourselves: how the mind, brain and emotions develop and work in the context of our highly socially evolved lives. We can in fact change our brains as a result of positive human interactions! We actually grow new brain cells everyday! Stress management forms part of the foundation of my work because stress, fear and social isolation contribute to all disease, mental and physical. Most important is that research reveals that the quality of the therapy relationship accounts for positive outcome far more than any other variable, including technique or theories. Setting Goals: Together we develop an individualized treatment plan that integrates your unique needs and characteristics with the best available and most effective approaches to your difficulties. Treatment: I have been trained in and have a wealth of experience with a wide range of interventions based on psychodynamic, humanistic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral and other theoretical approaches. I use an integrative approach that combines the most effective treatments to provide assistance in a time-sensitive manner in the context of a completely collaborative, professional relationship. What you can expect: We have strong evidence that therapy facilitates changes in the part of the brain that improves our ability to regulate emotions, expands our capacity to experience all emotions, enhances a sense of well being and the quality of relationships, and reveals undeveloped skills and abilities that lead to fulfillment, satisfaction and self mastery. Side benefits: I treat trauma of all types (PTSD, early childhood trauma, anxiety and panic attacks) using the most effective modern techniques. Many of the same techniques help with immune system function leading to better overall health and performance skills of all kinds. Workshops: Periodically I offer stress management and performance enhancement workshops and short term groups. |
